Ahead Of Christmas And New Year, 98 Percent Of Indonesia's Territory Is Entering The Rainy Season

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimates that around 96.8 percent of Indonesia's territory is in a rainy season during Christmas 2021 and New Year's Day 2022.

"Christmas and New Years are generally still in the rainy season. This means that 96.8 percent of Indonesia's territory has entered the rainy season," said BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto in Medan, quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 23.

This was stated by Guswanto after a working visit and inspection of the readiness of the Christmas and New Year 2021/2022 Integrated Command Post at the Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station, Medan, North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, the peak of the rainy season, he continued, as in North Sumatra Province occurred from November 2021 to the end of December 2021.

Several other regions in Indonesia will enter the peak of the rainy season in January to February 2022 which will occur gradually at not the same time.

"We can see that during Christmas and New Year it will still rain. Usually, for North Sumatra, it happens in the afternoon or evening," he explained.

So it is necessary to watch out for weather disturbances, such as cyclonic circulation, which is a wind meeting area that is currently observed in Peninsular Malaysia and west of Bengkulu.

"This will supply water vapor, thereby increasing rainfall in North Sumatra. There is another thing to watch out for heavy rains accompanied by lightning in North Sumatra, such as Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli, and Nias, there have been floods," he asserted.

"We estimate that the weather conditions in North Sumatra will last until mid-January or February, because when we released the 2021/2022 rainy season, we were still influenced by the La Nina phenomenon," said Guswanto.
