September 21 2018, news spread that Ratna Sarumpaet was the victim of beatings by a number of unknown people in Bandung, West Java. Photo of Ratna's bruised face with a bandage was spread on social media.

Ratna, who was one of the campaigners for Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno in the 2019 Presidential Election, told Prabowo and a number of Gerindra Party elites. They then believed and spread the news.

Until finally, Ratna confessed that she had been persecuted. He said the bruises occurred because he performed liposuction surgery at Bina Estetika Hospital, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on September 21, 2018.

October 5, 2018, Ratna was officially detained at the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters for spreading hoax news about the persecution case against her. During the detention period, a number of figures who became "victims" and participated in spreading Ratna's fake news were summoned by the police. They include Amien Rais, Said Iqbal, to Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak.

During her detention, Ratna tried to find a loophole by applying for a city detention. However, unfortunately the request was rejected by police investigators.

On January 31, 2019, Ratna's hoax case was transferred to the South Jakarta District Prosecutor's Office (Kejari). After the case files were examined and declared complete, the prosecutor from the South Jakarta District Attorney (Kejari Jaksel) submitted the hoax indictment file Ratna Sarumpaet to the South Jakarta District Court.

The inaugural trial of the Ratna Sarumpaet hoax case will be held at the South Jakarta District Court on February 28, 2019. The public prosecutor (JPU) in this case is the Kasipidum Kejari Jaksel Arya Wicaksana, Sarwoto, Donny M Sany, and Las Maria Siregar. The total number of trials that Ratna faced reached nine.

During the trial period, Ratna submitted an exception or objection note to her case. However, the judge rejected Ratna Sarumpaet's exception at the trial of the interlocutory decision at the South Jakarta District Court (PN).

Furthermore, the judge stated that the examination of the case of spreading fake news through electronic media by the defendant Ratna Sarumpaet would continue to the main point of the case.

In the end, the panel of judges at the South Jakarta District Court (PN Jaksel) sentenced Ratna Sarumpaet to a sentence of 2 years in prison. Ratna was proven to have made propaganda in spreading hoaxes and fake news.

Ratna was deemed guilty of spreading hoaxes which resulted in chaos as regulated in Article 14 paragraph (1) of Law Number 1 Year 1946 concerning Criminal Law. The judge explained that Ratna was said to have deliberately caused a commotion by spreading hoax news of the persecution through stories and photos of her bruised and swollen face which was called persecution.

According to the Judge, this was different from Ratna's statement, who admitted to lying to her family because she was embarrassed. Moreover, Ratna even continued the fake story when she met with the political party elite so that Prabowo Subianto reacted. Moreover, Ratna's status as a campaigner for the Prabowo-Sandi National Winning Agency (BPN).

The trial period was over, Ratna was taken to the Class IIA Women's Prison in Pondok Bambu, East Jakarta. From a total of 2 years in prison, Ratna served a sentence of approximately 15 months and has been declared free today.
