BMKG Issues Early Warning Of High Waves Up To 4 Meters In North Sulawesi Waters
MANADO - The Bitung Maritime Meteorology Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning regarding vigilance against waves as high as 2.5-4 meters in a number of waters in North Sulawesi and its surroundings.
"The BMKG has issued an early warning for high waves that have the potential to occur until tomorrow," said the BMKG Coordinator for Observation and Information at the Bitung Maritime Meteorology Station, Ricky Daniel Aror, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 14.
He explained that in general, the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia is dominantly moving from the west-north of the sea with speeds ranging from 4-15 knots.
Wave heights of 1.25-2.5 meters are likely to occur in the waters of the Sitaro Islands, Bitung-Likupang waters, southern Maluku Sea, Sitaro Islands waters, and southern coastal waters of North Sulawesi.
Wave heights of 2.5-4 meters are likely to occur in the northern waters of the Sangihe Islands, north and east of the waters of the Talaud Islands, and north of the northern part of the Maluku Sea.
"People and ships carrying out activities in the early warning area, please pay attention to these conditions," he said.
BMKG recommends the importance of paying attention to high risks to shipping safety, including fishing boats (wind speed more than 15 knots and wave height above 1.25 meters).
In addition, barges (wind speed more than 16 knots and wave height above 1.5 meters), ferries (wind speed more than 21 knots and wave height above 2.5 meters), and large vessels such as cargo ships /cruise ship (wind speed over 27 knots and wave height above four meters).
