JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that 20 aftershocks of earthquake activity occurred after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 that occurred in the Flores Sea, East Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday at 10.20 WIB. A virtual press conference attended from Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon said that the aftershocks had a maximum magnitude of 6.8 and a minimum of 3.4. "Every time there is a large earthquake, especially a scale above magnitude seven, it will be followed by aftershocks. it could be a little, depending on the characteristics of the area," Sadri said as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 14. "These aftershocks vary but are smaller in scale. We urge the entire community not to panic but remain vigilant," he said.
However, he appealed to residents living in the area around the epicenter of the earthquake to be aware of the aftershocks. "Aftershocks can continue to occur and even though they are small in scale, houses that are not well-constructed can collapse, so if someone is inside the house, they can become victims," he said. Residents living in earthquake-affected areas are advised not to go straight into their homes, but first check the condition of their residential buildings to ensure that there is no damage that could destabilize the building. Sadri also asked residents who live in mountainous areas and around cliffs. be aware of the possibility of landslides. "Because this earthquake is quite large, the impact of the cliffs can also slide, so it is better to avoid going there, don't go near the cliffs, don't go up the mountain first until it is absolutely guaranteed that the aftershocks are over. ," he said.
