Floods Hit 9 Regions In South Sulawesi

MAKASSAR - Rain that has fallen in the last three days has caused catastrophic flooding in nine areas in South Sulawesi. Those areas are Makassar, Maros, Pangkajene Islands, Barru, Sidenreng Rappang, Soppeng, Wajo, Gowa, and Jeneponto.

According to the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Sulawesi Province Muhammad Firda in Makassar, Wednesday, floods occurred among others in Biringkanaya, Tamalanrea, Manggala, Panakukang, Tamalate, and Rappocini sub-districts in Makassar City.

According to BPBD data, the flood forced 3,206 residents to evacuate in 37 refugee camps in Makassar City.

Floods also occurred in the districts of Balocci, Pangkajene, Bungoro, Minasatene, Labakkang, Ma'rang, Sigeri, Mandalle, and Tondongtallasa in the Pangkajene Islands Regency and affected 5,000 residents.

In Barru Regency, which is adjacent to Pangkajene Islands, flooding occurred in the sub-districts of Mallusetasi, Soppeng Riaja, Balusu, Barru, Tante Riaja, and Tanete Rilau.

In Soppeng Regency, the flood caused the death of one person and affected 5,786 families in the Districts of Lalabata, Dontri-donri, Gandra, Lilirilau, Citta, Marioriawa, and Liliriaja.

In addition, floods hit the Tempe, Sabbangparu, and Belawa sub-districts in Wajo Regency, and affected around 1,000 families. The flood caused nine schools, five health facilities, six places of worship, and rice fields to be inundated in the area.

In Maros Regency, flooding caused residential areas, places of worship, schools, and rice fields to be inundated in Marusu, Maros Baru, Lau, Bontoa, Simbang and Bantimurung sub-districts. The flood affected 100 families in those sub-districts.

The flood also caused settlements, places of worship, and schools in Gowa Regency to be inundated. The floods that occurred in Somba Opu, Bajeng, Pattalassang, Pallangga, Bontonompo, and Barombong sub-districts in Gowa Regency affected 325 families.

In Sidenreng Rappang Regency, floods caused damage to bridges in Bilokka Village, Pancaluntang District, but did not cause casualties. Floods also occurred in the Tamalate and Binamu sub-districts in Jeneponto Regency.
