3 Sub-Districts In Soppeng, South Sulawesi Are Flooded

MAKASSAR - A total of three sub-districts in Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi, namely Kandra, Donri-Donri and Lalabata sub-districts were hit by floods due to heavy rains that had fallen in the last two days and triggered the Lawo River to overflow.

This was stated by the Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Soppeng BPBD, Rokhyanthi, Monday, December 6.

The ecological disaster that hit the district, which is known as the 'city of bats', also washed away at least two housing units and a number of livestock that had not been recorded.

Heavy rains began to pour down Soppeng Regency on the evening of Sunday, December 5, and so far it has not let up. Soppeng BPBD received information if there were houses that shifted after being hit by floods around the Ompo bathing area.

"From the information we got, the house was swept away by water, no one could be saved. Our officers are now on the scene," he said.

According to information from the community in the field, the house and its contents were scattered by the current. Meanwhile, the occupants had time to save themselves before their house was swept away by the flood.

Based on data from the Soppeng Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), it is known that in addition to washing away two houses in Lalabata District, the flood also submerged dozens of other houses in Belo Village, Ganra District and in Donri Donri Village, Donri Donri District.

Regarding weather conditions and rainfall in the South Sulawesi region and its surroundings, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region IV Makassar has appealed to anticipate the potential for extreme weather from 5-7 December 2021.
