KPK Doesn't Appeal Sentence Of Former South Sulawesi Governor Proven Corruption, Immediate Execution To Jail

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will not appeal against the former Governor of South Sulawesi Nurdin Abdullah and will immediately carry out the execution according to the Makassar Corruption Court's decision.

Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement Ali Fikri said the decision was taken after the KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU) studied the decision of the panel of judges in the bribery and gratification case that ensnared Nurdin Abdullah. The former PDI-P politician was sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of Rp. 500 million.

"After we studied all the considerations of the panel of judges, it turned out that the legal analysis of the KPK Prosecutor's team in its indictment has been taken over by the panel of judges. So the Corruption Eradication Commission has decided not to file a legal action against the verdict of the defendant Nurdin Abdullah," Ali told reporters, Monday, December 6.

This decision, he continued, was also taken against the decision of Edy Rahmat, who was the former Secretary of the South Sulawesi Public Works and Spatial Planning Service (PUTR).

Ali said the two defendants also did not file an appeal and accepted the verdict handed down by the panel of judges. "Thus, the case on behalf of the defendants Nurdin Abdullah and Edy Rahmat is now legally binding," he said.

Furthermore, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will immediately carry out a decision from the Makassar Corruption Court. However, Ali has not specified when exactly the execution will be carried out.

"KPK will implement the Corruption Court's decision. We will inform you further about the progress of the implementation of the decision," he said.

As previously reported, the Makassar Corruption Court not only sentenced Nurdin Abdullah to 5 years in prison. He was also required to pay a fine of IDR 500 million, subsidiary of 4 months in prison.

The verdict is lighter than the demands of the KPK prosecutor who asked Nurdin Abdullah to be sentenced to 6 years in prison plus a fine of Rp. 500 million, subsidiary to 6 months in prison.

In addition, Nurdin is also required to pay compensation to the state in the amount of Rp. 2.187 billion and S$350 thousand no later than a month after the court's decision has permanent legal force. If he does not make the payment, his property will be confiscated and auctioned off.

If the auction results are not sufficient, Nurdin will be sentenced to an additional three years in prison. Next, the judge also ruled that Nurdin's political rights were revoked for 3 years after he served his sentence.
