Jack Dorsey's Joy On Twitter, Accused Of Daring To Close Donald Trump's Account
JAKARTA - The news that Twitter has been abandoned by its founder, Jack Dorsey, has shocked the world. The reason is, Dorsey has sacrificed a lot for the application with the blue bird logo.
Jack Dorsey was born on November 19, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States (USA), of Marcia Smith and Tim Dorsey.
In short, he studied at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. But in the end, he transferred to New York University. This is where he came up with the idea to create a short message sharing platform with his friends.
Launching Famous People, Tuesday, November 30, he started working as a programmer, and moved to Oakland, California in 2000 in search of better career prospects. Dorsey started a company to send taxis, couriers, and emergency services using software.
Unfortunately, Dorsey's company failed and he struggled for several years to make a living by freelance. In fact, she took a massage therapy course. However, he never gave up on his dream of creating a short message service, which he dreamed of.
Later, Dorsey approached Odeo, a directory and search destination site, who was interested in the text messaging service. He managed to catch the attention of Odeo co-founder Evan Williams and one of the company's executives Biz Stone.
In October 2006, Dorsey, along with Biz Stone, Evan Williams, and several other Odeo members, founded Obvious Corporation, which later developed into the microblogging site, Twitter.
In just two weeks, Dorsey created a simple site where users can instantly post short messages called 'tweets' with 140 characters or less. Dorsey posted his first tweet on March 21, 2006. Later, he sold his tweets as NFT for US$2.9 million in 2021.
At first, Dorsey served as CEO of Twitter. But in 2008, Williams took over the role of CEO, while Dorsey became chairman of the board. Since then, the company has grown rapidly. In the five years since its founding, Twitter users have sent 50 million tweets per day. Subsequently, Dorsey resumed the CEO role in 2015.
It didn't stop there, in 2009, Dorsey worked with fellow entrepreneur and computer science engineer Jim McKelvey to form Square Inc. Originally started as a mobile payments company, Square eventually branched out into financial services and merchants as well. This is a fast-growing company and Dorsey serves as its CEO to this day.
Jack Dorsey Often Faces Unfair Accusations
Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites today, with more than 290 million monthly active users worldwide. Compiled from the New York Times, several legislators in the US are demanding that Twitter do more to tackle misinformation and hate speech on the mushrooming platform.
While others accused Dorsey of censorship and argued that Twitter should allow more content to stay online. Moderation issues have been a constant annoyance for Dorsey.
He has envisioned Twitter as a platform for free speech and opposed the idea of removing content, especially from world leaders and other important figures.
However, former US President Donald Trump's tweets, which often spark controversy, test Dorsey's stance. Twitter initially decided to label some of Trump's tweets as misinformation before eventually deleting his account.
In recent years, Dorsey has become increasingly interested in cryptocurrencies and the principle of decentralization of the technology. He said in 2019 that Twitter would help build a decentralized form of social media that would allow users to set their own algorithms.
This helps users promote content and moderate their community, rather than relying on technology companies to make those decisions.
Other Achievements Under Dorseys Leadership
Over the past year, Twitter has struggled to end years of criticism that it has been slow to introduce new features to its 211 million daily users, and has lost out to social media rivals like Instagram and TikTok.
Under Dorsey's leadership, Twitter acquired the email newsletter service Revue and launched Spaces, a feature that allows users to host or listen to live audio conversations.
The company is also rolling out advertising enhancements to help brands find Twitter users who may be interested in their products, a key component of the company's goal of doubling annual revenue by 2023.
However, Twitter stock has slumped in recent months, adding to pressure on Dorsey to end his unusual arrangement as CEO of two publicly traded companies.
With his resignation as CEO of Twitter, and being replaced by Parag Agrawal, Dorsey will now focus on leading Square and other activities such as philanthropy.
