Floods Hit A Number Of Villages In The Interior Of North Barito, Central Kalimantan

NORTH BARITO - A number of villages in East Teweh District, which is one of the interior sub-districts in North Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan, were hit by flash floods due to the overflowing of the Teweh River, a tributary of the Barito River.

"The flood has risen very quickly since this morning and has continued to rise until this afternoon," said East Teweh Camat Winardi, quoted by Antara, Thursday, November 25.

According to him, currently the flood has submerged a number of village roads and houses of local residents with heights varying from 20 centimeters to 1.5 meters.

Villages that were flooded include Benangin 1, Benangin 2, Benangin 3 and Benangin 5.

"A number of houses have been flooded, especially those in the lowlands," he said.

He said that this morning the Benangin Village area was hit by rain and the potential for rain would come again, seeing that the sky was still cloudy.

"This flood also cut off road access from East Teweh District to Gunung Purei District because the Sungai Benangin bridge was flooded," said Winardi.

This flash flood is also expected to inundate other villages in the sub-district bordering East Kalimantan, especially in villages located along the river that are regularly subject to flash floods, including Sampirang 1, Sampirang 2 and Wakat Village.

"We hope the flood will recede soon before tonight," he said.
