Fishermen In Jambi Reluctant To Go To Sea Due To Extreme Weather, Fish Stocks In The Market Are Running Low, Prices Soar Too

JAMBI - The extreme weather that has occurred in Jambi Province in the last two months has caused fishermen on the east coast of Jambi to be reluctant to go to sea. This condition causes marine fish stocks to run low, thus affecting the selling price.

Head of the Jambi Province Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service, Tema Wisman, said that there were two districts most affected by the increase in fish prices, namely Tanjung Jabung Timur and Tanjung Jabung Barat.

"The Jambi Provincial Government will continue to monitor and find solutions so that the price of captured fish does not increase too high," Tema said in Jambi as reported by Antara, Wednesday, November 24.

Usually in one day there are more than 20 fishing boats out to sea to look for fish. For now only five to ten fishing boats have disembarked. In addition to capture fisheries production, continued Tema, a decline also occurred in aquaculture production.

For example, catfish production. Under normal conditions, catfish can be produced up to 20-25 tons per day. "But in the last two months only about 15 tons per day," he explained.

"The high intensity of rainfall causes fish cultivators to reduce seed distribution and reduce production, because seeds stocked in extreme weather are prone to death," said Tema Wisman.

Likewise for other types of fish cultivation, such as tilapia, gourami and catfish. Currently, the production of gouramy in one day is around 300 kilograms and catfish 2 tons.

The production of aquaculture fish is mostly in Muaro Jambi and Batanghari districts. This is because most cultivators utilize fish farming in the Batanghari River using cages.

Meanwhile, Jambi BMKG Station Head Ibnu Sulistyono said at the peak of the rainy season and if there were convective clouds it would increase wind speed and cause higher waves. Thus, fishermen are advised to be more vigilant when going to the sea when looking for fish.

Fishermen are advised to pay attention to the weather forecast before going out to sea to fish. "For fishermen to increase their vigilance, considering that in the current rainy season, the potential for extreme weather can occur at any time," said Ibnu Sulistyono.
