Says Djokovic Will Be Remembered Like Sampras, Medvedev: He Was Amazing
JAKARTA - Novak Djokovic's victory at the 2021 Paris Masters received appreciation from his opponent in the final, Daniil Medvedev. According to Medvedev, one day Djokovic will be remembered for all the achievements throughout his career like his idol, Pete Sampras.
Djokovic won in three sets against Medvedev in the final on Sunday, November 7 with a final score of 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3. This result later became Djokovic's reply to Medvedev after the US Open.
Unfortunately, Djokovic's antagonistic character prevented the Serbian tennis player from getting as much appreciation from fans as his two rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Even so, Medvedev has his own views for Djokovic's victory. According to him, the tennis player will be remembered by the next generation with all the achievements throughout his career.
“In the end they will see Novak everywhere. That's when people start to understand (and say), 'OK, what he's done is amazing'," Medvedev said as quoted by The Guardian.
Furthermore, Medvedev also compared Djokovic with US tennis legend in the 1990s, Pete Sampras. As the latest generation, Medvedev did not feel the Sampras era, but he heard how great the owner of the 14 grand slam titles was.
"Ten years after he (Djokovic) retires, there will be people who will watch tennis like me. I didn't see Sampras play, I was too young (in the Sampras era) but I heard that he was amazing – it will be the same (with Djokovic),” Medvedev concluded.
