Puan Encourages Green Economy Development To Become An Investment In Life In The Future

JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, supports the world in implementing a global green or low-carbon development strategy in an effort to reduce emissions. He also encourages the use of renewable energy as an energy transition step to achieve the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"The climate crisis continues to be a threat to all mankind. The commitment to address climate change must be maintained because the crisis due to climate change will have a negative impact on the achievement of the SDGs. We must invest for the future so that the green economy must be a joint strategy," said Puan in her statement, Thursday November 4th.

Puan appreciated the commitment of 190 countries and organizations in the world, including Indonesia, to end the era of fossil energy, especially coal at the 26th Conference of Parties (COP) in Glasgow, Scotland, some time ago. Puan stated that the UN Climate Change Conference is a global commitment to tackling climate change.

“The COP26 World Leaders Summit should be a global effort to tackle climate change through more inclusive and greener development. So the agreement to reduce emissions must really be realized, including Indonesia," he said.

“Although it still takes time considering Indonesia is currently still very dependent on fossil fuels. But we must be optimistic that we will be able to use renewable energy as soon as possible to bring the world a better place,” added Puan.

According to him, the commitment to reduce is considered important because the world is currently at a tipping point in facing a climate change crisis. Puan also said that all countries need political will to increase their emission reduction ambitions and take adaptation steps through green development strategies.

“The world must come together to tackle emissions. And cooperation from all countries is needed. International cooperation must be emphasized on green economy investment, and a disaster resilience system," said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

Puan then encouraged developed countries to provide assistance to developing countries in an effort to 'green' the earth. Indonesia itself targets the transformation of the use of coal into electricity by 2056 so that to be able to achieve the cessation of the use of fossil energy in 2040, it still needs assistance.

“Developed countries must take the lead in reducing emissions, and provide financial and technical assistance to support mitigation and adaptation efforts of developing countries. We must inherit a better world for future generations, a safer, fairer and more prosperous world,” said Puan.

At the COP26 summit, more than a hundred world leaders also pledged to end deforestation and restore forest function by 2030, including Indonesia. Puan also believes that this can be realized if the international community is consistent in living it.

“Although the capabilities and needs of each country must still be seen. But basically, Indonesia continues to make efforts to stop deforestation," explained Bung Karno's grandson.

Puan said the DPR RI will continue to oversee every government policy and program related to this issue. According to him, Indonesia must be able to realize green economic development.

"There must be continuity between the protection of nature and national development programs," concluded Puan.
