Medan Residents Hand Over Kuwuk Cats To BBKSDA North Sumatra

MUDAN - Muhammad Prayudi, a resident of Jalan Jamin Ginting, Medan, Johor, handed over a protected animal, namely a pair of kuwuk kittens (Prionailurus bengalensis) to officers from the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA).

"Previously, Prayudi bought the kitten one month ago in Binjai City, North Sumatra," said North Sumatra BBKSDA Public Relations Officer Andoko Hidayat, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 3.

However, because one of the Kuwuk Cat's legs was injured, Prayudi took the animal to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

"However, from the veterinarian, Prayudi received an explanation that the kuwuk cat is an animal protected by the government," he said.

Andoko said, then Prayudi went to the North Sumatra BBKSDA office, and immediately handed over the cat kuwuk which had been kept by the residents of Medan Johor.

The kuwuk cat, male and female, estimated to be about two months old, was then evacuated to the Animal Rescue Center (PPS) in Sibolangit, Deli Serdang Regency.

One kuwuk cat is in good health, and the other has a fracture in the right upper thigh and a fracture in the left leg.

"The two protected animals will undergo treatment and rehabilitation, until there is a recommendation from the medical team to ensure whether or not they are worthy to be released into the wild," he said.
