JAKARTA - The Indonesian Republic Wredatama Association (PWRI) Manager Andreas Anugerah encourages the elderly to remain empowered to become a productive group through social roles in the community.
"We (PWRI) want to move through the community. That is why we actually want to be like in Muslims there are teachings, because it turns out that they already have their own groups. In addition, in churches or other worship groups," said Andreas in the PWRI Easter Celebration 2026 in Jakarta, Saturday.
He also touched on the culture in Japan that highly values the role of the elderly in social and economic life.
According to him, respect for seniors makes the elderly in the country remain active and independent.
"In Japan, senior people are valued for their experience and maturity. They still feel responsible for advancing their country," said Andreas.
Andreas assessed that the elderly needed to continue to be empowered so that they were not only seen as a vulnerable age group, but still had an important role in the family and community because the elderly could be a source of prayer, example, and moral support for the younger generation.
"We may not be able to do much physically, but the prayers of parents for their children are still important," he said.
He continued that the government's attention to the elderly has now increased, so the most important thing is how all elements of society can also build awareness that the elderly can still be empowered. Therefore, Andreas invites the elderly to continue to grow in faith even though their age continues to increase.
"Age can be old, but the faith remains the same. I myself am only 76 years old, I feel that God's word is real," he said.
He admitted that life experience made him understand that the maturity of faith is not always related to age, considering that many elderly feel they are mature enough, so they are reluctant to accept changes in their spiritual life.
"There is no connection between age and faith. I am also not a perfect person, but at this age I feel renewed," he said.
