JAKARTA A United Nations (UN) advisory body on artificial intelligence (AI) released its final report on Thursday, September 19, 2024, containing seven recommendations for addressing AI-related risks and improving the gap in governance of this technology. The report will be discussed at a UN summit that will be held this September.

The advisory body, formed by the United Nations last year and consists of 39 members, called for the establishment of an independent panel to provide neutral scientific knowledge of AI and address the imbalance of information between AI laboratories and the world community.

Since ChatGPT, Microsoft-backed AI tool, launched in 2022, AI usage has grown rapidly. However, this progress has also sparked concerns about the spread of disinformation, fake news, and copyright infringement. To date, only a handful of countries have set specific laws to regulate the deployment of AI tools.

The European Union (EU) is in front of other countries by passing a comprehensive AI Law, while the United States prefers a voluntary compliance approach. Meanwhile, China focuses on maintaining social stability and state control in AI development.

On September 10, 2024, the United States together with about 60 other countries supported a "blueprint" for the use of AI responsible for the military sector. However, China rejected the document, which is non-legally binding.

The United Nations states that as AI development is in the hands of several major multinational companies, there is a risk that this technology will be forced on the public without them having the opportunity to provide input on how the technology is being used.

Seven UN Main Recommendations:

The report emphasizes that these measures are important to ensure the development of AI that is responsible and sustainable in the future.
