OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Will Appear In Front Of Senate Panels To Discuss AI Regulations

JAKARTA - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will make his first appearance before a Senate panel next week as the United States Congress seeks the best way to regulate artificial intelligence as this technology becomes stronger and wider.

Altman will testify before the Senate Privacy, Technology and Law Subcommittee on Tuesday May 16 regarding the need for legislation to protect American citizens as governments and companies start using artificial intelligence in everything from medical, financial, to worker surveillance.

According to the announcement from the panel, this will be Altman's first testimony before Congress.

In addition, Altman will also attend dinner on Monday evening May 15 for members of the House of Representatives, jointly organized by Ted Lieu's Representative office.

Altman also attended a meeting at the White House last week discussing how to ensure regulatory protection. Responding to a question about whether the company agreed with regulations, Altman told reporters: "We turned out to have the same view as what needs to be done."

One of the other witnesses is Christina Montgomery, head of privacy officers at IBM.

" Artificial intelligence urgently requires rules and protection to address its promises and great risks," said Senator Richard Blumenthal, chairman of the panel. "This meeting is the start of our Subcommittee's work in monitoring and illuminating advanced algorithms and powerful technologies from artificial intelligence."
