JAKARTA - Four astronauts have been designated as crew of the Artemis II mission initiated by NASA and its international partners. This historic mission will bring one of the first women, first and first people from Canada.

The crew of Artemis II includes three Americans Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch from NASA, and one from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Jeremy Hansen.

Wiesman will be the commander of the mission, Glover himself will serve as a pilot, while Koch and Hansen will be mission specialists on the way, as quoted from NASA's website, Tuesday, April 4.

The four of them will work as a team to carry out a series of ambitious demonstrations during the test flight aboard the Orion spacecraft, launched with the strongest rocket in the world of the Space Launch System (SLS).

Prior to becoming a commander for the Artemis II mission, Wiseman previously worked as an aviation engineer at the International Space Station (ISS) for Expedition 41 from May to November 2014.

Wiseman has recorded more than 165 days in space, including nearly 13 hours as space leader during two trips in space, the orbita complex.

Prior to his assignment, he had also served as Head of the Astronaut Office from December 2020 to November 2022. Artemis II is the second Wiesman flight.

Glover, who will be the first man of color to the Moon, previously served as a pilot at NASA's SpaceX Crew-1, which landed on May 2, 2021, after 168 days in space.

As an aviation engineer on the ISS for Expedition 64, he contributed to scientific investigations, scientific demonstrations, and participated in four space trips. Glover will be the first person of color on a mission to the Moon.

Meanwhile, Koch will also make his second flight into space on the Artemis II mission. He served as an aviation engineer on the ISS for Expeditions 59, 60, and 61.

Koch set the record for the longest single space flight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space and participated in the space journey of all the first women, as well as on the Artemis II mission.

Representing Canada, Hansen made his first flight into space. A colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces and former fighter pilot Hansen won the Bachelor of Science title in space science from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, and the Master of Science in the field of physics from the same institution in 2000, with a focus on Tracing the Wide Field of View Satellite.

He was one of two recruits selected by CSA in May 2009 through the third Canadian Astronaut Recruitment Campaign and has served as Capcom at NASA's Mission Control Center in Johnson and, in 2017, became the first Canadian to be trusted to lead NASA's astronaut classes, leading training for astronaut candidates from the United States (US) and Canada.

Artemis II flight tests for approximately 10 days will be launched on NASA's powerful SLS rocket, to prove the life support system of the Orion spacecraft, and validate the capabilities and techniques that humans need to live and work in space.
