Solo City Is Dark During The Implementation Of Earth Hour, WWF Indonesia Invites Care For The Environment

SOLO - A number of streets in the city of Solo looked dark during Earth Hour 2023, which this time was centered on Surakarta. Monitoring in Solo, Saturday, March 25, at 20.30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), the lights on several roads, one of which was on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, began to turn off. In addition, the lights in the Surakarta City Hall Complex were also turned off.

WWF Indonesia Deputy Director Climate and Market Transformation Joko Sarjito at the switch off which was held at the Surakarta City Hall Courtyard said that currently, the Earth Hour has become a global campaign with 192 other countries.

"For Indonesia, 21 cities will participate. For Indonesia, this is the 14th anniversary," Joko said as quoted by Antara.

He said the city of Solo was chosen because it is a city with a large population in Central Java. In addition, Solo has a community with diverse characters.

"The Surakarta City Government also has a Solo Resik program to manage waste, with this program it is a campaign to make nature better," he said.

Even though the lights were only turned off for an hour, he hoped the program would become a campaign to make nature better.

"Only one hour is the first step to be more concerned, save a lot of energy, reduce emissions, and reduce damage to nature. God willing, the impact will be varied, we hope this warning will be the first step to care more about the environment," he said.

Including the reduction of plastic waste, he said, until now it is still homework for the community.

"As much as 30 percent of plastic waste is in the oceans, it comes from land. We hope this will be a good first step to improving our nature," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor of Surakarta, Teguh Prakosa, said that the implementation of Earth Hour is a human form of loving the earth.

"Disasters are everywhere, because of garbage, floods hit Indonesia. This should be evaluated by all, human error is an important part," said Teguh.

He said that so far the Surakarta City Government is committed to protecting the environment, including the river and the beauty of the city.

"This is a good opportunity for us to invite the community to change our behavior together. How to love the earth, what humans can't do to protect this universe. A good opportunity for the environment to be sustainable, let's save energy," said Teguh.
