Coordinating Ministry: Transfer Of Mary Jane From Yogya To Jakarta According To SOPs And Human Rights

JAKARTA - The Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections ensures that the transfer of convict Mary Jane Veloso from Yogyakarta to Jakarta runs according to standard operational procedures (SOP). Transfers prioritize security, transparency, and respect for human rights (HAM).

"The process of transferring inmate Mary Jane from the Yogyakarta Class IIB Women's Prison to the Class IIA Jakarta Women's Prison has been successful," said Deputy Coordinator for Immigration and Corrections at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Kumham Imipas, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram in a statement received in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, December 16.

Surya explained that the transfer of Mary Jane from Yogyakarta to Jakarta was a follow-up to the Acting Director General of Corrections Number PAS-PK.05.05-2540 dated December 13, 2024.

The death row convict in the drug smuggling case left for Jakarta via land on Sunday (15/12) night. Pick-up officers arrived at the Yogyakarta Class IIB Women's Prison at 22.30 WIB, to then check the administration and hand over of Mary Jane's file.

Mary Jane and her luggage got into the Satopspatnal Team of the Directorate General of Corrections at 22.50 WIB. Right at 23.00 WIB, the pick-up team car and Mary Jane left for the Class IIA Jakarta Women's Prison followed by a car from the Gunung Kidul Prosecutor's Office.

The Filipino prisoner arrived at the Class IIA Women's Prison in Jakarta on Monday at 07.30 WIB accompanied by six Satopspatnal officers from the Directorate General of Corrections and four officers from the Yogyakarta High Prosecutor's Office and the Sleman District Attorney's Office.

The arrival of Mary Jane and her entourage was received directly by the Head of the Class IIA Jakarta Women's Prison accompanied by representatives from the Correctional Division of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights DKI Jakarta and the East Jakarta District Attorney.

"The acceptance process begins with health checks, administrative verification, and the signing of the handover report. After undergoing medical and administrative examinations, Mary Jane has now been placed in the residential room that has been prepared," said Surya.

Furthermore, Mary Jane was required to take part in the environmental recognition program (mapenaling) as part of an initial orientation procedure in prisons, before she was transferred to her home country, Philippines.

Jane will be flown to the Philippines in the next few days, "said Surya as well.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Human Rights Imipas Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Deputy Minister of Justice of the Philippines Raul T. Vasquez had signed a practical agreement regarding the transfer of Mary Jane to her home country in Jakarta, last Friday (6/12).

The Philippine government has agreed on all conditions put forward by Indonesia for the transfer of Mary Jane. Meanwhile, Mary Jane will be sent home as a permanent inmate before Christmas 2024.

Mary Jane Veloso is a death row convict for smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroin arrested at Yogyakarta Adisutjipto Airport in April 2010. The woman, who was later identified as a victim of human trafficking, was sentenced to death by the Sleman Court in October 2010.
