Nadiem Speech For Teacher's Day, Make Small Changes

JAKARTA - Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim invited teachers to make small changes without having to wait for orders or directions from the center. He conveyed this through a speech script that he will read out on National Teacher's Day 2019 on November 25.

Nadiem began the manuscript of his speech by apologizing because the message he conveyed was different from that conveyed by the previous minister of education and education. Even the manuscript of his speech was no more than two pages, which he uploaded on the kemdikbud.go.id site.

"Dear Sir and Madam Teachers, usually the Teachers' Day tradition is filled with inspirational and rhetorical words. Sorry, but today my speech will be a little different. I want to speak as it is, with a sincere heart, to all teachers in Indonesia. , from Sabang to Merauke, "said Nadiem in his speech.

The former boss of Gojek said that teachers have a noble and at the same time extremely difficult task. Nevertheless, teachers are still tasked with shaping the future of the nation even if they have to do other administrative work.

"You know very well that the potential of a child cannot be measured by the results of the test, but you are forced to chase numbers because of pressure from various stakeholders," he wrote.

Nadiem also stated that teachers actually understand that every child has different needs, but uniformity trumps diversity as a basic principle of bureaucracy. Therefore, Nadiem wants teachers to inspire their students to innovate.

"I will not make empty promises to you. Change is a difficult and inconvenient thing. One thing is for sure, I will fight for freedom of study in Indonesia," he said.

Nadiem also asked the teachers to start making small changes in the classroom. There are five points outlined by Nadiem, namely inviting the class to discuss not just listening, then giving students the opportunity to teach in class, initiating social service projects that involve the whole class, discovering a talent in students who lack confidence, and offering help to the teacher who's having a hard time.

"Whatever small changes, if each teacher does it simultaneously, the big ship named Indonesia will certainly move. Happy teachers day," he said.
