Batam Residents Asked To Beware Of Rob Floods

BATAM - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hang Nadim Batam, Riau Islands appealed to residents in the local area to be aware of tidal flooding.

BMKG forecaster Hang Nadim Batam Rizky F. Widowati said the tidal flood was due to the full moon phase phenomenon on June 3, 2023, along with Perigee (the closest distance to the moon to earth) on June 6, 2023.

"It has the potential to increase the maximum sea level. Based on water level data monitoring and tidal predictions," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, June 3.

He explained that in Batam City, tidal flooding has the potential to occur on the coast of Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, Nongsa, and surrounding areas.

Apart from Batam City, four other regencies and cities in Riau Islands have the potential for tidal flooding, namely Tanjungpinang City, Karimun Regency, Lingga Regency, and Bintan Regency.

"The city of Tanjungpinang is in Bukit Bestari, Tanjungpinang City and its surroundings," he said.

In Karimun Regency, this potential occurs on the coast of Meral District, Pamak Village, Pamak Laut Village, and its surroundings.

" Lingga Regency has the potential to occur on the coast of West Singkep, Singkep Pesisir, and Senayang sub-districts," he said.

In Bintan Regency, he said, the potential for tidal flooding occurred on the coast of North Bintan District, Sebong Bay, East Bintan, Kijang, and surrounding areas.

BMKG appealed to coastal communities to be aware of the phenomenon of coastal flooding or tidal flooding which is predicted to occur on June 3-12 2023 in a number of these Riau Islands areas.

This can result in disruption of transportation around ports and coasts, community activities, and loading and unloading activities at ports.
