ASEAN Summit Approves Cooperation In The Development Of Electric Vehicle Ecosystems

JAKARTA - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit has agreed to explore cooperation and collaboration in the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.

"The cooperation includes improving infrastructure and charging stations, creating a business environment and investment climate to attract investment, including public-private partnerships, optimizing sustainable production and use of materials and resources to achieve higher value than the supply chain of electric vehicles in the region and increasing participation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)", said ASEAN leaders reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, May 10.

The statement also stated that this collaboration can go through collaboration in research activities and human resource development, promotion of investment opportunities and increasing public awareness, proper environmental impact management, strengthening regional energy resilience, promoting the use of renewable energy in the mobility sector, gradually leaving conventional internal combustion engine vehicles into zero-emission vehicles, including electric vehicles, and discussing financing agendas to support the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem in the region..

ASEAN leaders reiterated their commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

ASEAN also expressed respect for the differences in the level of economic development and the diversity of policies and actions related to electric vehicles among its member countries.

ASEAN leaders also recognize the high demand for the transportation and automotive sectors to support economic growth and the role of electric vehicles in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the decarbonization agenda.

ASEAN emphasized the significant role of electric vehicle adoption as part of ASEAN's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate energy transition, carry out decarbonization of the land transportation sector in the region, achieve net zero emissions (NZE) targets and increase energy security in every ASEAN member country and in the region..

ASEAN leaders are committed to developing a regional electric vehicle ecosystem involving all ASEAN member countries, as well as building ASEAN as a global production center for the electric vehicle industry to support sustainable economic growth in the region.

In addition, ASEAN also encourages harmonization of regional standards for the electric vehicle ecosystem as well as training and certification based on international standards.
