Tsunami Pascaperingan, Residents Affected By The Mentawai Earthquake Are Urged To Return Home

JAKARTA - Residents are advised to return to their homes as a result of the Mentawai earthquake which has the potential for a tsunami. Especially those who each took refuge in the mountains of the area.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said that her party had ended the tsunami early warning after the tectonic earthquake of 6.9 magnitudes centered in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra Province. "We have ended the tsunami early warning at 05.17 WIB, so please ask residents who are still on the mountain please return to their respective places," said Dwikorita quoting Antara. "God willing, the condition is safe, remain calm, but alert because at this time there is no longer a tsunami, but there is still the possibility of an increasingly weaker aftershock," he added. Dwikorita said the largest strength of the latest aftershock was recorded at only 5.0 magnitudes. As long as the house is confirmed to be intact, not damaged, and not cracked, residents can return to their respective homes.

He warned residents if the house was damaged or cracked so as not to be in the damaged or cracked location because it could endanger the safety of life. Based on BMKG records, the tectonic earthquake located at sea at a depth of 23 kilometers with a distance of 177 kilometers northwest of the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, occurred at 03.00 WIB, Tuesday morning (25/4). BMKG shows the earthquake had an update parameter that was originally 7.3 magnitudes to 6.9 magnitudes. The earthquake was a shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate.
