Lower Than The Prosecutor's Demand, 8 Head Of UIN Lecturer Bribery Village Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison

Eight village heads in Demak Regency, Central Java, were sentenced to two years in prison in the alleged bribery case against a lecturer at the State Islamic University (UIN) Walisongo Semarang in the process of selecting village officials in the area. The verdict read by Chief Judge Arkanu during a trial at the Semarang Corruption Court, Tuesday, was lighter than the prosecutor's demands for three years in prison. In addition to corporal punishment, the judge also required the defendant to pay a fine of Rp. 50 million which if not paid it would be replaced with imprisonment for one month. The eight defendants who were tried were each Gedangalas Village Head Turmuji, Jatisono Purnomo Village Head, Tanjunganyar Alaudin Village Head, Sambung Siswahyudi Village Head, Tambirejo Village Head Agus Suryanto, Mantrainarjo Village Head M. Juanedi, Banjarsari Hariadi Village Head, and Medini Village Head M. Rois "To declare the defendant guilty of violating Article 5 paragraph (1) of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption as amended by Law no. 20 of 2001," said Arkanu as quoted by Antara. The corruption crime that occurred in 2021 began when FISIP UIN Semarang became the executor of the examination in the selection of village officials in Gajah District, Demak Regency. The eight defendants allegedly promised 16 registrants to fill the position of apparatus and village secretary by giving some money. They set a price of IDR 150 million for the position of village officials and IDR 250 million for the position of village secretary. In their consideration, the judge stated that the defendants' actions did not support the government's program in eradicating corruption. Based on this decision, both the public prosecutor and the defendants expressed their thoughts.
