Vatican Says Pope Francis' Condition Is Improved, Hospital Treatment Continues

JAKARTA - Pope Francis' health condition is gradually improving after being hospitalized for respiratory tract infections, the Vatican said on Thursday, saying he was back to light activities in the room where he was being treated.

The whale was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after complaining of difficulty breathing, raising new concerns over the health of the 86-year-old whale, which is suffering from a number of illnesses.

"Her Majesty Pope Francis rests well at night. His clinical picture is gradually improving and he is continuing the planned treatment," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

"This morning after breakfast, he read several newspapers and continued his work," he added.

The Vatican said Pope Francis was not only confined to his bed, the statement said he had prayed in a small chapel in the hospital room.

However, Bruni did not say when Pope Francis would leave Gemelli hospital in Rome, Italy where he was being treated.

Earlier, the Vatican said on Wednesday Pope Francis was expected to spend "a few days" there.

Separately, the Italian news agency ANSA reported earlier, nursing staff were "very optimistic" that, unless there was a surprise, whales could be sent home on time for Palm Sunday celebrations on April 2, early from a busy week with various ceremonies heading for Easter Sunday on April 9.

ANSA, citing unnamed hospital sources, said doctors "for now" put aside heart and pneumonia problems on Pope Francis. The Vatican also said that he did not have COVID-19.

It is unclear whether the leader of nearly 1.4 billion Catholics in the world can take part in various services, even if he is allowed to return home on weekends.

Last year, the Pope attended but did not lead several Easter services due to knee pain he suffered. If the same happens again, a cardinal will be appointed to preside over the service. If the whale is in good health, he can take part in events from the chair.
