JAKARTA - Mike Rutherford described Genesis' last show with the words "strange" and "emotional".
Speaking to Classic Rock magazine, Rutherford reflected on Genesis' last live performance which took place at the London Arena O2 on March 26, 2022.
He said when he looked at the repertoire list and saw that there were only a few songs left to play, he started to feel "emotional".
"It was great after that when everyone, including Peter [Gabriel] and Richard McPhail [tour managers from the seventies], were together in the dressing room. In addition, we closed the backstage," said Ruherford.
"But the actual show feels weird. I was fine until I saw on my set that there were only four songs left. Seeing it in print made me emotional, but after going through all the trouble with Covid, it was great fun to finish it.
However, he also described the final tour as "excitement".
I tend to forget how much music means to people's lives. For example, we performed some shows in America in a city we haven't played in 30 years and sold out that night. That proves how beautiful Genesis' reach is. There's a bit of sadness, but I really enjoyed our last tour. Always fun on stage with Phil (Corypto) and Tony (Banks)."
Genesis - consisting of Rutherford, Collins and Banks, along with tour musicians totaling Stuermer, Nic Collins, Daniel Pearce and Patrick Smyth - performed with a sold out performance at London's O2 Arena last year.
Formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967, the show marked the end of a well-known 55-year career that made them one of the most successful musical actions, selling more than 100 million albums worldwide.
That night, Genesis played a total of 23 songs, including I Can't Dance, Mama, Turn It On Again, No Son Of Mine, and Invisible Touch.
Before playing Land Of Confusion, Collins greeted the audience and announced that it would be Genesis' last show.
As the crowd applauded, Collins sat thinking, seemed to accept the fact that it was the last 'home'. He then quipped: "After tonight we all have to get a real job."
