The teachings of closing the aurat in Islam are not only intended for women, but also ordered by men. The scholars argue that based on reason and Shari'a, it is mandatory for men to cover their aurats from their eyes. So where is the male aurat limit?

Closing the aura is not only aimed at maintaining views or avoiding negative things, but also one of the legal requirements in prayer. Based on sharia, aurat is interpreted as an area for the human body that must be covered or forbidden in an open, visible, and touched state.

The letter comes from the word 'al-awar' which has a bad meaning, defects, everything that is closed by humans and driven by shame. In Fiqh, Syakh Abdul Wahab Abdussalam Thawilah explains that aurat in terms of language is anything that feels bad if shown. So which is the limit of the male aurat that must be closed?

The order regarding Muslims must cover their aurat is contained in An Nur's letter paragraph 30. In this verse, Allah SWT responds to it as follows:

Muslims agree that closing their aurat in front of others and when praying is an obligation. Ibnu Hubairah in Al Ifshah stated that they agreed on this obligation because it is one of the legal requirements for prayer.

However, Imam Malik has a different view. According to him, closing the aurat is mandatory during prayer, but it is not considered as a legal requirement for prayer. The law regarding closing this aurat is explained in various hadiths of the Prophet SAW. One of them, narrated from Abu Sa'id Al Khudri, Rasulullah SAW said:

"Men are not allowed to look at the aurats of other men and women are not allowed to look at the aurats of other women. Men are also not allowed to unite and come into contact with other men in one dress and women are not allowed to unite and come into contact with other women in one outfit." (HR Muslim, Abu Dawud, and At-Tirmidzi)

In another hadith, it was explained that men are required to cover up their aurats, except in front of their wives or sahaya servants. narrated from Bahz bin Hakim (which narrated his father, who heard directly from his grandfather) he asked, "O Prophet, what should we cover up and we leave it from our aurat?"

He said, "Keep your aurat except to your wife or the legal servant of the woman you have."

I ask again, "What if one of us is alone?"

He then gave an answer, "Shame for Allah is more entitled to be presented." (HR. Ibnu Abi Syaibah and five hadith imams.)

In some hadiths it was explained that Rasulullah SAW forbade his people to be naked. narrated by Al Miswar bin Makhoramah, he said, "I came with a heavy stone, and at that time I was wearing clothes that suddenly slipped. Because I was carrying a stone, I couldn't put it until I got to the destination."

The Prophet SAW said: Fix your clothes, and take them and don't walk naked. (HR. Muslim and Abu Dawud)

From these hadiths, we can understand that there are aurat limits that can be shown. Based on Ahmad's history of hadiths, the aurat for men is from the navel to the knee. The Prophet SAW said:

Meaning: Because between the navel and the knee is aurat. (HR. Ahmad)

According to most scholars from the four schools, thighs are aurat for men. In the Smart Book Hadith Edition Revision written by Syamsul Rijal Hamid, it is explained that Muhammad bin Jahsy ra told that the Prophet SAW had passed Ma'mar, who at that time both thighs were open.

Then, Prophet SAW said: Hai Ma'mar, cover the two thighs. Really the two thighs are aurat. (HR. Ahmad and Bukhari)
