Beware Of Ground Movement In Jakarta

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said there are 10 points in Jakarta that have the potential to experience ground movement this month.

Among them are 10 points, 8 points in South Jakarta and two others in East Jakarta. For the South Jakarta area there are in Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pancoran, Pasar Minggu and Pesanggarahan. While in East Jakarta, they are in Kramat Jati and Pasar Rebo. All of these points have medium category land movement potential.

Areas with medium potential, soil movement will occur if the rainfall is above normal, especially in areas bordering river valleys, gawirs (steep walls), road cliffs or if the slopes are disturbed.

"The potential for soil movement is medium level, meaning that if the rainfall is above normal, there is a potential for landslides to occur," Head of Jakarta BPBD Data and Information Center, Iwan Ibrahim, told ANTARA in Jakarta, Sunday, October 10.

Iwan said that every month the DKI Jakarta BPBD always uploads information on the potential for land movements in the Jakarta area. And these 10 points are areas prone to ground movement. Most of the 10 points are areas that intersect directly with riverbanks, cliffs and slopes.

He said, observations and measurements regarding the potential for ground movement were carried out by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG). BPBD as a coordinating agency in the field of disaster updates this information as an effort to anticipate and educate the public and officials in the affected areas.

BPBD released this to provide information to the village head and the community to be careful or alert to the area, because if the rainfall is above normal there is a potential for landslides to occur. With this information, he added, countermeasures could be done more quickly, especially mitigation or preventing ground movement from occurring.

"The most important thing is that no one builds buildings in potential areas such as cliffs and river banks. The sub-district and village head oversees this," said Iwan.

Launching from the bpbd.jakarta.go.id page, it is stated that ground movement is a consequence of natural dynamic phenomena to achieve new conditions due to slope balance disturbances that occur, both naturally and due to human activity.

Soil movement will occur on a slope, if there is an imbalance that causes a mechanical process to occur, causing part of the slope to move according to the force of gravity and then after a landslide occurs, the slope will be balanced or stable again.

Landslides are a form of erosion in which the transport or movement of soil masses occurs at a time in a relatively large volume. In terms of movement, apart from landslide erosion, there are still some erosions due to the movement of the soil mass, namely creep, rock fall and mud flow.

Because the mass that moves in a landslide is a large mass, the occurrence of landslides will often bring victims, in the form of environmental damage, namely agricultural land, settlements, and infrastructure, as well as the loss of human lives. The process of ground motion involves a complex interaction between aspects of geology, geomorphology, hydrology, rainfall and land use.
