Receive Lebanese PM, Pope Francis Discusses Ceasefire With Israel
JAKARTA - Pope Francis reportedly received a visit from Lebanese interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati at the Vatican on Friday, December 13, local time. This meeting is to discuss the long-delayed Lebanese presidential election, as well as a ceasefire with Israel.
"(Friday) This morning, Holy Father Francis received an audience from the President of the Council of Ministers and interim officials of the Republic of Lebanon, His Excellency Mr. Najib Mikati," said the Vatican Holy Throne Press Office, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, December 14.
During the meeting, the two sides highlighted strong diplomatic relations and the role of the Catholic Church and the Christian community in supporting Lebanon.
Pope and Mikati also discussed various socio-economic challenges faced by Lebanon which were exacerbated by the absence of the president over the past two years.
"As an expression of satisfaction with the ceasefire in the southern part of the country, it is emphasized that peaceful coexistence between adherents of various religions will continue to be the identity of Lebanon, and help Middle Eastern peace," the statement said.
Political parties in Lebanon have not been able to agree on a presidential candidate since the term of office of President Michel Aoun ended in October 2022.
Lebanese president was elected by parliament, which is currently divided between the pro-West and pro-East blocs.
