UN Rely On US Leadership In Combating Climate Change
JAKARTA - The Secretary General (Secretary General) of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said that the leadership of the United States (US) is the main key in overcoming climate change. According to him, climate change must be countered with new breakthroughs to protect those most vulnerable to the increasingly worrisome impacts of climate change.
"I believe that there is no way to solve the climate emergency in the world without US leadership," said Guterres at Columbia University quoted by CNA, Thursday, December 3.
He cited the first global agreement to combat climate change signed by then US President Barack Obama. Thanks to Obama having a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two big countries have one heart against climate change in 2016.
But the spirit against climate change was broken halfway when Donald Trump led Uncle Sam's country. In fact, the 45th president of the US has called the climate change a hoax. No kidding, Trump even questions climate change scientifically.
Ultimately, in 2017 the US opted out of the climate change countermeasures agreement, the Paris Agreement. The decision to leave was in effect since 4 November.
New HopeHope also emerged when Joe Biden became the elected US President. Because, in the previous campaign Biden had promised to rejoin the Paris Agreement.
"I trust the American people to ensure that this country will take the global leadership necessary for climate action to succeed," said Guterres. "Everything you can do to get cities, states and federal governments to take the lead globally for climate action is critical."
Earlier, a group representing European and US investors had warned that by leaving the Paris Agreement, the US risks falling behind other countries. At the very least, the US could fall behind in the race to create a cleaner global economy.
Therefore, Biden and Guterres discussed this issue last Monday. The two of them sat down together to discuss the importance of cooperation in fighting climate change.
