Minister Of Industry Agus Says Indonesia's Manufacturing Industry Can Capai Net Zero Emissions By 2050

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the manufacturing industry is targeted to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2050.

According to Agus, the target is 10 years earlier than the national net zero emission target, which is 2060.

"Based on our work meeting two years ago, yes, we set NZE in the manufacturing sector that will occur in 2050 (or) 10 years earlier than the national target in 2060," Agus said in his remarks at the 1st Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) 2024 in Jakarta, Thursday, September 19.

The net zero emission is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions nearing zero, with the remaining emissions reabsorbing from the atmosphere, for example by oceans and forests.

In other words, net zero emissions are that the conditions for human-generated greenhouse gas emissions are no greater than the amount that can be absorbed by the earth.

In line with this, said Agus, the increase in the added value of manufacturing in Indonesia is carried out based on the principles of a sustainable green industry.

The long-term goal is to create a carbonless future. Meanwhile, Indonesia's business development in achieving net zero carbon can be seen from The Green Future Index 2023 data released by MIT Technology Review Insights.

MIT Technology Review Insight is a medium under the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Based on this data, Indonesia is ranked 49th in the world as a country that transitions to energy, industry, agriculture and environmentally friendly communities through investment in renewable energy, innovation and environmentally friendly policies.

Agus said Indonesia rose 21 places from 70th position in 2022 and was above India (50), Vietnam (53), Thailand (55), Turkey (63), Malaysia (68) and Russia (70).

"Of course, this cannot be separated from the contribution of industrial companies that have committed and worked hard to realize the creation of green industry principles in their companies," said Agus.

"Hopefully this industrial company can be an example for all industries in Indonesia to continue to innovate and contribute in creating a sustainable future," he added.
