JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is again collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) to create an environmentally friendly industrial area (eco industrial park/EIP) in order to achieve the industrial sector's net zero emission target in 2050.

In this case, the Ministry of Industry has signed the Project Document for Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program Phase II-Indonesia: Country-Level Intervention Project 2024-2028 which marks the start of phase II of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program (GEIPP) project.
GEIPP is a program from UNIDO which aims to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of industrial areas that have implemented environmentally sound concepts, especially in improving economic, environmental and social performance that contributes to inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
In Indonesia itself, the GEIPP phase I project has been running since 2020 and will end this year.
The GEIPP phase II project will be effective starting January 1 2024 and at the same time shows the seriousness of the Ministry of Industry in efforts to transform industrial areas (KI) into environmentally friendly industrial areas.
In the phase II project, there is an additional program which includes the addition of two KI pilot projects, namely the Medan Industrial Zone (KIM) and the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC) Deltamas.
Apart from that, there is also a program to establish an EIP Center in the PIDI 4.0 building in South Jakarta, as well as an EIP program for greenfield investment industrial areas.
To encourage the implementation of EIP, the Ministry of Industry has issued Minister of Industry Decree Number 3174 of 2022 regarding the Inter-Ministerial Forum for the Acceleration of Eco Industrial Park (EIP) Development.
This forum involves 11 ministries/institutions that have roles according to their field of work to implement EIP in Indonesia and is expected to produce input, formulation or concept for EIP for industrial areas in Indonesia.
"Apart from that, it can provide guidance for stakeholders in mapping environmentally sound industrial areas according to their field of work," said Agus.
It is hoped that this Ministerial Decree can be implemented into a Minister of Industry Regulation on EIP which can later become a technical guideline for the implementation of EIP in Indonesia.
