JAKARTA - In order to develop the potential for New Renewable Energy in the electricity sector, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif said that Indonesia plans to build a Super Grid.

"Indonesia also plans to build a Super Grid to increase the development of renewable energy, while maintaining the stability and security of the electricity system," said Arifin, quoted Monday, September 18.

Arifin added that this is in line with Indonesia's steps in developing an energy transition roadmap to achieve Net Zero Energy by 2060 or sooner.

"In this roadmap, we aim to develop 700 GW of renewable energy in the energy mix, which comes from solar, hydro, sea, geothermal and nuclear power," explained Arifin.

He added that the construction of the SUper Grid will open up opportunities to connect with the ASEAN Power Grid.

From the demand side, he continued, Indonesia will implement several strategies, for example electrification in industry, penetration of electric vehicles, utilization of hydrogen, development of city gas networks and energy efficiency.

He added, to accelerate the energy transition, access to low-carbon technology and financial support with low interest rates and easily accessible sustainable financing is needed.

He further said that countries in ASEAN are blessed with diverse and abundant energy resources, especially renewable energy resources totaling more than 17,000 Giga Watt (GW), most of which comes from 15,602 GW of solar power and 1,255 GW of wind. Meanwhile, gas reserves of around 130 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF) mainly come from Indonesia 44 TCF, Malaysia 32 TCF, and Vietnam 22.8 TCF.

"ASEAN, with its enormous clean and renewable energy resources, has made its best efforts in implementing the energy transition to achieve Net Zero Emissions by the middle of this century," concluded Arifin.
