South Korea Offers Indonesia Cooperation In Nuclear Clean Energy Development

JAKARTA - Commission VII of the DPR RI received an honorary visit from the Korean Embassy to Indonesia represented by Deputy Chief of Mission Park Soon Deok in the living room of the leadership of Commission VII DPR RI, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 28 yesterday.

Deputy Chairman of Commission VII DPR RI Eddy Soeparno said the closed meeting discussed the cooperation plan offered by Korea to Indonesia in developing the domestic nuclear clean energy program.

"Korea wants to participate in the development of domestic nuclear clean energy," he said in a written statement, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 29.

Edy said that Korea had developed nuclear clean energy first and had a good security system.

"Therefore, we ask for more information so that we can be given enrichment in terms of knowledge about nuclear development in Korea," he said.

Edy further said that the development of nuclear power plants that Indonesia is targeting is the development of nuclear clean energy using small-scale modular reactor technology (SMR).

SMR technology is designed to be safe and produce lower carbon footprint than conventional reactors.

According to him, small-scale nuclear modular reactors are alternative solutions to supply electrical energy in isolated areas.

The power reactor, which is less than 300 megawatts, can be used as a means of generating energy to maintain the stability of regional economic progress, especially remote areas.

Indonesia needs clean energy by signing the Paris Agreement. In fact, Indonesia has also launched carbon emission neutrality in 2060, where the nuclear energy mix is included in it.

Edy also does not deny that so far the community has been identical to view nuclear as a terrible bomb. In fact, nuclear is one of the sources of energy needed by all countries in the world, including Indonesia.

"The understanding or socialization is really needed so that people understand that nuclear development in Indonesia is for positive and peaceful things, namely as renewable energy," he concluded.
